We have ummmed and aaahed about writing this blog all week, purely because we don’t want our message to be misinterpreted. So before we go any further let us clarify one very important fact….WE ARE NOT ANTI-VACCINE, nor are we PRO-VACCINE. We are PRO-CHOICE. We believe in herd immunity, we believe that there are some benefits to vaccines. We believe there are risks when choosing not to vaccinate, and there are risks when choosing to vaccinate. It is one of the toughest dilemmas facing many parents and our hearts go out to any family that has experienced adverse consequences from these decisions.
But this blog is not about whether vaccines are a good idea or not, it is about whether or not the government has the right to make this decision for us by issuing a financial ultimatum. From a human rights perspective this policy is disempowering those who have no other choice. Some may argue that we are being given a choice, but when that choice involves a significant loss of income that many families rely on in order to survive, it is no longer a choice for many. For those families that don’t qualify for family payments from the government, then yes, they do have a choice. Ironically, it is these higher socio-economic families that are more likely to choose not to vaccinate…. so why this policy? When we heard about this policy we were in shock. Surely in this day and age, and in a country such as Australia that is not led by a dictatorship, we shouldn’t be told what we have to put into our children’s bodies. Aside from this, vaccinations are not a one size fits all approach. For some people who do want to vaccinate their children, they may decide that they want their vaccines spaced out, or administered individually, or delayed until the child’s immune system is stronger. We would hope there is provision for this within this policy. There is no doubt that this is a controversial topic that is generating a lot of emotion and outrage (from both sides) within the community. Let us reiterate that this is NOT about whether or not vaccines are safe. We are purely focused on the matter of individual choice. Our major concern with this kind of leadership is where does it end? Today it’s no jab, no pay - what will it be tomorrow? How far are they willing to go? Just sayin’…… Rebecca Milham - Naturpoath/Nutritionist Sue Warner - Holistic Living Counsellor *For the record, Rebecca’s 3 children ARE vaccinated (aside from Giardisil which will not be getting done). One of her children did have mild adverse complications from the vaccines, and in hindsight, while she still would have done the vaccines, she may have chosen to space them out and administer separately. Sue’s children are both vaccinated, and have suffered no adverse effects.
